PAM - Why would God tell Nephi to kill a helpless unconscience Laban just to get his brass plates?

JOEL - It sounds like a terrible thing that one would not expect God to command someone to do.

Here are a few reasons that we can find supported by scriptures:

1. The spirit told Nephi to do it because:
"Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief." (1 Nephi 4: 13)

2. The Spirit of the Lord told him to do it and Nephi had previous miraculous experiences with the spirit of the Lord so he knew for sure who was telling him to do this and that it was not just coming from his own mind. (1 Nephi 4: 10)

3 The Lord delivered Laban into his hands for this purpose. (1 Nephi 4: 11)

4. The brass plates may have been destroyed or lost forever when Jerusalem was destroyed.(1 Nephi 1: 13)

5. Self defense. Laban had already tried to kill them before and would have come after them again to kill them. (1 Nephi 3: 13)

6. This not the first time the Lord caused the death of the wicked to serve His purposes (The Flood Gen 6:7, Sodom and Gomorah Gen 19: 24, Moses and the plagues Ex 7-12)
