MICHAEL - Were the men who shot and kill Joseph and Hyrum Smith ever charged of their murder?

JOEL - Among the approximately 100 or more people in the mob there were 9 men indicted who were directly involved in the shooting.Four of them escaped and five were put on trial. Those five were Thomas C. Sharp, publisher of the Warsaw Signal, an anti-Mormon newspaper; Levi Williams, colonel and commanding officer of the 59th Regiment of the Illinois militia; Mark Aldrich, commander of the Warsaw Independent Battalion; William N. Grover, captain of the Warsaw Rifle Company; and Jacob C. Davis, state senator and commander of the Warsaw Cadets.Even though there were eye-witness testimonies of the shooting, the trial resulted in the acquittal of the men so they did not receive any punishment from the court and continued on with their normal lives. Despite some myths of their eventual gruesome deaths, they went on to enjoy successful careers.
