KELSEY - In Heb 1 Paul said:
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Doesn't this mean that God spoke through Jesus and is no longer speaking through prophets?
JOEL - Paul is just saying that most recently God spoke to the people living at his time through Jesus Christ; not that God could not or would not speak to us through future prophets.
If that is what Paul meant then why would Jesus give us a test to determine if a future prophet is a true one?
Matt 7
15 ¶ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Jesus is obviously talking about future prophets that will come after Him and how to know if you can trust them.In fact in Acts, long after Jesus died, there was Simeon and Barnabas who were called prophets.
Acts 13
1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
And in Acts 11:
27 ¶ And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
And in Eph 4 when organizing His Church:
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
God is now speaking through prophets again as He did before and after Jesus came.
