JAMIE - The quote below from Prophet Joseph Smith. Do you know what bible verse he is referring to?

“He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ Himself did; and I will show it from the Bible”.

JOEL - In the King Follet sermon Joseph Smith said, referring to God the Father: “He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ Himself did; and I will show it from the Bible”. “We have imagined ...that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see.”

Smith was referring to the following verse:
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, sheweth him all things that himself doeth” (John. 5:19-20)

See also:
"Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things" (John 8:28).

Joseph Smith is reasoning that Jesus himself, as the Son, would undergo the same kind of mortal life and death that the Father had experienced. Smith affirmed a pattern of Messianic sacrifice. First, there are the gospel accounts of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection in this world. Second, Smith quoted from the Gospel of John referring to the Father being the exemplar of Jesus’ life, which would include his mortal life, death and resurrection.

If the Son “doeth...what he seeth the Father do,” makes one realize that Jesus’ earthly life and death on the cross was also what he saw his Father do. The Prophet Joseph Smith said:
"As the Father hath power in Himself, so hath the Son power in Himself, to lay down His life and take it again, so He has a body of His own." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith)

He also said:
"My Father worked out his kingdom with fear and trembling, and I must do the same; and when I get my kingdom, I shall present it to my Father, so that he may obtain kingdom upon kingdom, and it will exalt him in glory." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith)

President Joseph Fielding Smith provided a proper perspective on this concept by Joseph Smith when he said:
"From this remark we gather that the Son was doing what the Father had done before him. However, so far as the Father is concerned, we will leave that until we receive further knowledge, when and if we become glorified in his kingdom." (Answers to Gospel Questions, VOL. 2 by Joseph Fielding Smith)

President Hinckley said when asked on this subject:
"That gets into some pretty deep theology that we don't know very much about."
