FRED - How can adversity like this pandemic be seen as blessing that some church members choose to do?
JOEL - A pandemic can be both adversity and a blessing. It is adversity for those who have to suffer the loss of life, health, and employment. However, Jesus said things like this happen so that "the works of God should be made manifest in him" (John 9: 3). It is a blessing in that it gives us opportunities to help others who are suffering. Those who help are blessed and those who are helped feel blessed because of the help that is given them.
Adversity also helps us to grow stronger and to recognize our dependence on God. A couple of sayings go "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and "Adversity tempers steel". Like steel that's strengthened when tempered by heat, you can be built up, not destroyed, by adversity in your life. A lot of this depends on one's attitude when adversity hits them. They can either feel despair and hopelessness or they can learn and grow from it with God's help and in that way adversity becomes a blessing. Not all people are able to do this so it is up to others to help them with love and support to get through the trials.
